Caterpillars in Sutton Massachusetts

Caterpillars are one of those mixed blessings. I think caterpillars are very cute and like to play with them, watching them walk their fuzzy little way along a stair or railing. However, when swarms of caterpillars are completely destroying my Brussels sprouts and turning them into skeleton-leaved entities, I am suddenly far less fond of caterpillars. Still, they are important members of our web of life.

Caterpillars and millipedes are similar, but there are a few differences. If you look at the legs on a caterpillar, each segment of his body will have one pair of legs. Millipedes will have multiple pairs of legs per segment. Also while the caterpillar legs tend to be long and are visible on the sides, a millipede's legs are very short and are mostly right underneath it.

Here are photos of some caterpillars, millipedes, and related creatures we have found in Sutton Massachusetts!
