Ruby Meadowhawk Dragonfly

There are many types of Meadowhawk dragonflies in Massachusetts. They look very similar to each other! This specific one is the Ruby Meadowhawk, or Sympetrum rubicundulum. It has transparent, gridded wings with only a spot of color on the far end. Its legs are black. This is how you tell it apart from the Autumn Meadowhawk, which has yellow or brown legs. The male ruby meadowhawk is red, as you might guess. The female is more golden or yellow in color. There is a decoration of black wavy lines down her side.

This photo was taken on July 20, 2006 in Sutton Massachusetts by me. She's sitting on the bud of a day lily.
