Deer Mouse in Sutton Massachusetts
There are several types of mice found in Sutton Massachusetts. Once of those is the deer mouse, or Peromyscus maniculatus. The deer mouse is 3-4 inches long, light grey-brown in color, with a tail about as long as the body. They have delicately curved ears and shiny black eyes.
I think deer mice are VERY cute and friendly. However, it is important to be careful around them. They can carry lyme disease and hantavirus. Even if the mouse is friendly and cute, it still might bite you by accident because it is scared, or scratch you, and cause you to get infected. It is wise to be careful around these mice and take proper precautions. Even just the dust from their feces or saliva can cause an infection. If you have mice in your house, take the proper steps to clear them out and clean out the area.
Mice are very smart and if you just put them into your back yard they will come back again. They can travel up to a mile. What we do is put them into a Rubbermaid bin and then drive them to a wildlife area over a mile from the house. That way they are happy, content, and cannot come back to the house.
