Witchcraft in Sutton
It’s Sutton History Sunday! This section pairs with the upcoming talk by the Sutton Historical Society on Sutton’s connection to the Salem Witch Trials. My ancestor died in Salem’s jail during those trials, under suspicion of being a witch, so this period of history is meaningful to me.
1745:
“Dec. 6th. “I have a strange account of some appearances of witchcraft in Woodstock and some other places. I pray God rebuke ye symptoms and suffer not ye Devil to appear in this audacious fashion. Lord Jesus, when thou didst send forth thy ministers thou gavest them power over unclean spirits to cast them out. O Lord suffer not these things in this age of light and knowledge to appear but give the ministers the same power to cast them out.” * [Dr. Hall’s Diary]”
The above quote is from “History of the Town of Sutton Massachusetts From 1704 to 1876”
The talk is Tue May 7th, 2019 at 7pm in the First Congregational Church. Its title is “Land Speculation in Early Sutton and the Connection to the Salem Witch Trials.”
