Donation and Charity Opportunities for Authors

Sutton Writing Group

Whatever hurdles we ourselves face, there are others in our world who are burdened with far heavier challenges. We should each do our part to make our world a better place.

Here are a few ideas.

Local Libraries

There are many families and individuals who rely on libraries as their only source of reading material. Their entire world is opened through the power of a local library. Consider donating books to your local libraries. Also consider offering to go in and do a reading or talk based on your book's material. The more we can help our community members learn and grow, the better off we will all be.

Foster Care Program in Worcester - Whitinsville - Fitchburg

Imagine you're a child who isn't even sure where he or she is going to live. Imagine the family situation is so tumultuous that nothing is certain. If you write books which children can relate to, you could become a precious part of their lives. Most of us remember having a favorite book or two in childhood - one we could read and re-read. Your book could be that pathway to security of a child who otherwise feels lost.

Kimberly at Enchanted Passage in Sutton has amazingly offered to handle the logistics of this children's book distribution project! Kimberly will take in books any time the bookstore is open. If you want to buy books at the store for donation, she'll give you a 20% discount on those books. Then our Foster Care contact will come by and pick the books up from Enchanted Passage. The foster care workers then distribute the books individually to the children. They have four offices they service - two of these offices are in Worcester, a third is in Whitinsville, and the fourth is in Fitchburg.

The Foster Care system will gladly take both new and gently used children's books, so if you have gently used books that need a new home, please consider donating to this project! If you're an author and this is your own book, please consider signing it and maybe even adding an inspiring note to the front. Your book could become their treasured keepsake.

We'd love to have you be a part of this project. There are currently over 11,000 children in Massachusetts foster care. The opioid epidemic is ripping families apart, and children are the ones who suffer the most.

Please stop by Enchanted Passage in Sutton to drop off your new and gently used books. They'll take care of the rest.

Note: I've gotten interest from people who want to help this project but who are not local to Sutton. What you can do is call Enchanted Passage at (508) 841-5437 - order the books from them with a credit card. They'll put the books directly into the donation box. That way you can choose your favorite books to share with the children. I'm sure Enchanted Passage would even write a message in the books to the children for you if you wanted :).
