Tadpole Glossary of Terms
When you're raising tadpoles, it's good to understand the various terms used in books and on websites. Here are some good words to know about your tadpoles.
Amphibian - Frogs fall into the amphibian class of creatures. The next level up is the superclass "Tetrapoda" which generally has four limbs. Mammals, reptiles, birds, and amphibians are all tetradods. Note that amphibians are separate from reptiles.
Egg - The egg is the starting form of a frog. Unlike chicken eggs, a frog egg is soft with no hard shell.
Embryo - The embryo stage of the tadpole is when it is still within its egg.
Frog - The adult form of a tadpole - the one capable of breeding and creating the next generation.
Froglet - Once a tadpole grows front and rear legs it is called a froglet. It usually still has a tail at this point.
Leg Bud - When a tadpole starts to grow its legs, it first has just little leg buds, or pointed areas where the legs will grow. Eventually these push out and become full legs.
Tadpole - The child form of a frog - right up through the froglet, or four-legged-tadpole, stage.
