Snow in May 2009 - May Photos in Sutton Massachusetts
Usually May in Sutton is a gorgeous month - lots of flowers blooming, the weather is in the 80s or even low 90s sometimes. The mosquitoes are still not quite active. Birds are showing off their springtime colors. People are planting their gardens.
However, on May 24, 2009, we had an incredibly powerful thunderstorm rip through Sutton. It took out power for a large chunk of Sutton starting at 4:30pm and not coming back for many until after 11pm. Whenever power goes out, my boyfriend likes to drive around the area to see how widespread the outage is. When he hit 146, he was amazed. It looked like a tornado had ripped through the area! It had been very hot that day - high 80s - but there was SNOW on the highway, and a TON of leaves!
Route 146 was heavily layered with green leaves.

The side of the road was also layered.

You can see the thick piles of leaves everywhere, ripped from the trees by the winds.

But wait - what is this white stuff?

Snow? In May? In 90 degree weather?

Yes, definitely snow.

Green leaves were thickly layered everywhere.

Not enough snow to sled on, though.

A heavy sign was knocked over in front of this building.

Leaves everywhere.

The Karate sign is missing some pieces now.

Lots of leaves in front of the abandoned restaurant

But that's not all - a pond has formed on 146, which a minivan foolishly tried to drive across.

The minivan is now stuck.

Lesson - do not drive through a pond.

Navigating the pond.
