2010-2011 Winter Snow Photos
The winter of 2010-2011 began fairly typically in Sutton MA. We had our first snowfall on November 8th - a tiny flurry which promptly melted. That was all the snow for November! We had a little snow on December 23rd, an icy layer. We got our first "real" snowstorm on December 26th which gave us about three inches. That starts to feel like "real snow".
On December 27th we had a foot of snow with wild, banshee like winds. Things were starting to look interesting.
Then we head into January. On January 8th we got another 2" of snow on top of the previous snow. On January 13th we got hit with a school-closing storm which got us up to 14" of snow on the ground -

Note that snow was acting very strangely at this point. That "curve" you see in front of the grill is not part of the grill. It was a straight line handle, and that then slid forward and the snow actually hung in a garland shape on its own.
Here are some photos from January 18th - you can see the same garland effect from the snow on the porch edge.

There was also an icy set of things going on. Here's a view out my window of a bush, to give you a sense of what the whole bush looks like.

Now in this close up you can see how a ribbon of ice is hanging on the underside of the branch, almost like a flag!

Then another small snowstorm which got icy so now we had a crunchy top to this layer of snow. Then on January 21st we got *another* 7" of snow on top of that, so we were now building snow layers of different consistencies! We now had about 21" of snow on the ground! This one was a quick storm - tons of snow in the morning, clear blue skies in the afternoon!
This photo is from January 22nd - at this point we were driving on snow, it wasn't melting, and the snow is up over some peoples' mailboxes. Other peoples' mailboxes are barely keeping their heads above snow.

Then January 25th we had another 3 inches of light fluffy snow come down on us. Snow was now up past my knees. The stop sign at the top of my street has snow up to the bottom of the red octagonal sign part. The snow at the end of my driveway is plowed up higher than my car - i.e. I can't see past this snow wall when I am trying to pull out.
Here's a ton of photos from January 25th! The bird bath is nearly submerged now.

Here you can see the straight line of the handle on the grill.

The snow is now up over the seat level of the chairs. Those lines you see are the chair arms.

We've also been on an icicle watch while driving through town. Many houses have icicles that are taller than an adult human being! If one of these things fell, it could kill a person!

More photos of the snow lined streets.

I think the shed is securely closed for now.

This is the driveway snow, which we had snowblown, showing the sharp edge of that process. You can see the different layers of snow here!

I decided to enjoy the snow thoroughly. I went out into the back yard and made a meditation spiral by walking - knee deep - through the snow all the way in, then back out again! I am hoping Google Maps will take their satellite photo soon :)

Here's two photos from the inside of the spiral.

This was not the end of the snow by a longshot!
