Pauper Cemetery
The "pauper cemetery" in Sutton, Massachusetts was located on Town Farm Road, which makes sense. In the 1700s and 1800s a town farm / poorhouse is where a town put people who could not take care of themselves. Those poor were often forced to work or used as servants. In Sutton this poorhouse was first discussed at town meetings in 1767.
Sutton Poor House
In the pauper cemetery the graves all look exactly the same. Compared with many other cemeteries in Sutton, the stones here are very easy to read. Each one simply has the name and date range (or death date).
